The DVD Page 2:

Double Indemnity

I wonder how many people got bad ideas from this movie. Sorry to say, this kind of thing happens all too often. Consider this film an instruction manual for what not to do.

"I killed him for money and for a woman. I didn't get the money... and I didn't get the woman."

5th Element

This movie is groovy. The subject matter is the imminent end of the Universe, and how Bruce Willis saves the day.

This film is in the tradition of Indiana Jones, in the way it sets up the story and pays off at the end.

"Leeloo Dallas mul-ti-pass."

Forrest Gump

You wouldn't think special effects, but this one has loads. They are done to support the story, whch is rare. If you don't laugh out loud or shed a tear while watching, then you forgot to turn on the TV.

"Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautee it. There's, um, shrimp kebabs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir fried. There's pineapple shrimp and lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich... That's, that's about it."

Our Man Flint / In Like Flint

Of course, I put these two together. These movies were made when groovy was groovy. These are two of the best James Bond (007) spoofs of all time.

"Repeat after me - I am not a pleasure unit..."

Forbidden Planet

If you look closely at the things that happen in this movie, you will notice where Star Trek got a lot of their ideas from. I have heard that Gene Rodenberry admits as much, so that's cool. Plus, Altaria is very beautiful.

"The fool, the meddling idiot. As though his ape's brain could contain the secrets of the Krell."

Fantasia

From a filmaking point of view this animation is a masterpiece. The music is top-notch, and the entertainment value is off the scales. Really. It's good to have it on in the background at a party with your friends.

"Be careful with that magic spell, Mickey."

Ghostbusters

I have no idea how many times I have seen this movie. I never get tired of it (knock on wood). Bill Murray at his Bill Murry best.

"Ray, when someone asks if you're a God, you say 'Yes'! "

Godzilla (1998)

Here is another movie that I like, especially due to the beginning. It has that Speilberg/Lucas feel to it. Many locations, mysterious goings on, etc.. Godzilla doesn't look like the Godzilla that I grew up with, but that's okay, because the old one looked like a guy in a suit to me anyway.

"What footprint? I don't see it."

His Girl Friday

They speak at such a fast pace in this film, that the sentencesbegintoruntogether.

Cary Grant is happening as the ex-husband of Rosalind Russell. She is a crack reporter, and she is going to marry Ralph Bellamy. Or so she thinks. This is a screwball comedy of the highest order. Perhaps one of the best.

"If I ever lay my two eyes on you again, I'm gonna walk right up to you and hammer on that monkeyed skull of yours 'til it rings like a Chinese gong!"

The Incredibles

This is a charming childrens animated movie. You've probably seen it, and you probably own it, but if not, now's the time to get it and watch it over and over again. You might want to use slow-mo for the action sequences.

"I never look back, darling, it distracts from the now. "

Independence Day

I knew we always knew that there were aliens that crashed at Roswell. And they almost took over the world according to this movie. This remake of War of the Worlds brings the story into the present day. There are great characters, explosions and space-ship vs. fighter jet dog-fights.

""Can you do all that (expletive deleted) you just said?"

Inherit the Wind

This one doesn't get seen enough, in my opinion. I don't see it playing all month on cable. It ia a terrific drama with a thought provoking theme - say it softly...(evolution).

"I do not think about things I do not think about."

Jaws

I didn't go into the deep water in the ocean for a year after watching this flick. It was the perfect summer horror movie. It wasn't about the bogeyman, a possibly fictitious character, sharks really bite. And you really can't see them while they are sniffing your toes and adjusting their bibs.

"Boys, oh boys... I think he's come back for his noon feeding."

Kiss Me Deadly

This Mickey Spillane thriller has a great mcGuffin. It was made in 1955, but it still plays well today. Film Noir at it's best. Mike Hammer (the "hero"), even has a giant wall mounted answering machine.

"They're the nameless ones who kill people for the great whatsit. Does it exist? Who cares? Everyone everywhere is so involved in the fruitless search - for what?"

It Happened One Night

Frank Capra shot this movie in 1934. It won the Best picture Oscar. This is another screw-ball comedy. They don't make 'em like this any more.

"Why didn't you take off all your clothes? You could have stopped forty cars."

Little Big Man

Sean Penn's dad directed this movie in 1970. This is an epic film. Dustin Hoffman plays Jack Crab, who somehow gets caught up in all the historic events of the wild west. He uses reverse psycology on General Custer to get him to go make his last stand.

"I didn't say that. There are thousands of Indians down there. And when they get done with you, there won't be nothing left but a greasy stain. This ain't the Washite River, General, and them ain't helpless women and children waiting for you. They're Cheyenne brave, and Sioux. You go down there, General, if you've got the nerve. "

The Lord of the Rings Triolgy

I read the books when I was about 14, and they really opened my eyes as to how there is no limit to our imaginations. Now, Peter Jackson has applied his imaginative skills to pull of what a great many had failed to do - Make a good LOTR film trilogy. It's worth owning. You can always buy the book too.

"For Frodo!"

The Matrix

The first installment of this trilogy is the best, IMHO (in my humble opinion). The two sequals were good, but somehow the first one was the coolest.

"There is no spoon"

Midnight Run

I think this is one of Robert De Niro's first comedy roles, and he nails it. He is great in this movie. Tough, sarcastic, driven. Charles Grodin is also very funny as the fugitive being brought back to justice by De Niro. This is another one of those movies that you can watch over and over.

"You're OK, Jack. I think... under different circumstances you and I probably still would have hated each other!"

The Maltese Falcon

The cast in this movie says it all: Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre. Directed by John Huston, faithfully following the novel by Dashiell Hammett. I can't believe anyone over the age of 30 hasn't seen this one, but if not, now's your chance to have it dilivered directly to your door.

"What do you want me to do, learn to stutter?"

Men in Black

Once again, the first one was the best. Tommy Lee is great as the nonchalant old-timer, and Will Smith is good as the new sidekick. Their job, if they choose to accept it, is to constantly save the earth from destruction.

"We're not hosting an intergalactic kegger down here."

Mysterious Island

This is another one of those films that I only saw once a year in black and white, but it was worth waiting for, because it had everything I liked as a kid (and still like today): escapes, shipwrecks, giant insects and animals. It also uses a literary device called Deus Ex Machina to great effect.

"Look, there's a man coming out of the water."

The Mummy (1999)

In some ways, these two movies picked up where Indiana Jones left off. the special effects are great, the special features are extensive, and the women are very beautiful. Every video library should be sporting this title with pride.

"Prince Imhotep thanks you for your hospitality... and for your eyes... and for your tongue... but I'm afraid more is needed."

North by Northwest

Cary Grant makes the list again in this Alfred Hitchcock thriller. It has everything that Hitchcock loved to put in his movies. The McGuffin, the wrong man accused, the beautiful blond, the jaded government official, the charming villian. Not to mention the great Mise-en-Scene (image composition to help tell the story).

"Now you listen to me, I'm an advertising man, not a red herring. I've got a job, a secretary, a mother, two ex-wives and several bartenders that depend upon me, and I don't intend to disappoint them all by getting myself "slightly" killed. "
